Teaching Health And Safety To Your Children - Green Cross Code

There are many dangers that face an individual throughout their lives, but a lot can be avoided by using caution and the health and safety education we received whilst growing up. Parents with young children may find it difficult to teach about health and safety and how important it is, but should consistently attempt to educate so that as their children are aware of the risks that surround them.

Although it may seem difficult to teach of dangers without making your child fearful of the world, by frequently discussing health and safety rather than bombarding them with it, you can educate them on how to stay safe in a way that they will remember. Here’s some areas to focus on when teaching health and safety to your children.

People Safety and the Green Cross Code

When out and about, parents will need to teach their children about people safety and the Green Cross Code. Teaching of the correct and best ways to cross the road may need discussion prior to your outing as children can easily get overexcited when out for a walk, so make sure you ask them to stay close to you, and to hold your hand whilst crossing at the appropriate pedestrian crossing points. Whilst out, and crossing the road, make sure you show the safest way to cross, and how to check for oncoming traffic.

You should be consistently educating and reminding them of the importance of people safety, and who is safe to talk to should your child get lost. Teach about how those in uniforms, such as police, are the best people to talk to if lost, and how going into public buildings or a pre-decided safe area, like a library and asking for help from a librarian, will keep them safe until they are reunited with them.

In the Home

Dangers and risks are not just in the outside world, but also are apparent in the home. Our houses contain plenty of accident risks that can easily be prevented through education and making use of protective items. Teaching to stay away from drawers and ovens in the kitchen area will help prevent burns and other incidents, and covering plug sockets can prevent electric shocks.

Although hob covers and other safety devices can stop younger children from coming to harm, as they get older parents should focus their attention on educating about appropriate behaviour around dangerous items so that they can begin to understand how to use them safely.

Teach about Surfaces and Weather

What seems obvious to an adult may not be to a child, so when considering every day safety, a parent will want to educate about ground and surfaces and how the weather will affect them. Educating about soft and hard ground surfaces can be as simple as showing your child where they are allowed to play, and showing them that play surfaces like these are often the safest place to play.

The weather means that you will need to educate your little ones about how this can affect the ground. When the weather drops and roads and surfaces get icy or extremely wet, you will need to teach about how the ground can become slippery and more dangerous than usual and therefore that your child should be wearing appropriate footwear and take caution whilst walking. This can be done by a parent asking children to be cautious or to slow down during these weather conditions.

San Francisco With Kids - Golden Gate Park - The Embarcadero

San Francisco is many things.  One of the most European cities in America.  One of the food and wine centers of the world.  One of the most diverse cities in terms of people, income and political persuasions.  All true.  What San Francisco isn’t known for, is being the most kid friendly city in the world.

After starting my wine business, I ended up living only a short BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit, it’s our version of the Subway) ride away from San Francisco.  We’ve felt lucky to be able to enjoy the city year around, much of the time without needing a car and I thought that you might enjoy learning a bit about San Francisco with kids, in this space.

Golden Gate Park is a personal favorite for two reasons, well maybe three.  First, the Koret Children’s Corner is America’s first public playground and has been recently refinished with new play structures, swings and much more.  There’s also a 60 foot cement slide down the side of a hill, so it is fairly easy to entertain larger kids, remember your own cardboard box though. Golden Gate Park is also home to any number of museums, although kids tend to love the Academy of Sciences.  One part aquarium (the best one in the Bay Area) and one part science center, it’s pretty easy to kill half a day here without feeling like you’re walking a million miles in the process.  Lastly, Golden Gate Park is relatively close to a neighborhood called Cole Valley.  It’s in many ways the quintessential San Francisco neighborhood, row homes and 6 story and under condo developments abound, as well as good food.  Our favorite is The Ice Cream Bar, an old time soda fountain, ice cream shop and sandwich joint all in one. If you’re lucky, you’ll run into the flock of wild parrots which call the neighborhood home on your way to lunch.

The Embarcadero:

My son has learned to ride his bike, largely on our street, but also along the Embarcadero.  No matter what you and your kids are looking to do in San Francisco, you can likely find it along the 10+ miles of the Embarcadero.  From Pier 39 and Boudin Bakery on one end to the world famous Exploratorium (a hands on science museum perfect for kids between 4 and 8) and TCHO chocolate’s tasting room, there is a little bit for everyone.  Parks for little kids can be difficult to find in San Francisco, one of the best spots is adjacent to ATT Park, where you’ll find a diverse group of families almost all local to the city itself.  ATT Park also opens its play areas (slides included) to kids for free on weekends during the off season and certain away games during the baseball season.  Have a look at the schedule, it’s a nice way to kill a bit of time as well. There generally isn’t food served on off times, but there are a number of interesting and cheap eats directly next door to the stadium.

Have Kids? Ways To Get More Free Time for Yourself

When you become a parent, your lifestyle changes dramatically and it can sometimes prove near impossible to find a free moment for yourself. Because you are so busy looking after your family and their needs it can be overwhelmingly difficult to set aside a few hours in the week for your enjoyment. Kids nowadays are very active, whether they are budding Little Harvard, Yale or Oxford students, or maybe they are soccer’s next star, as parents we find ourselves constantly on the road to look after their needs. If you have the time to drive the kids to school, football training and bring them to the doctors as well as everything else in the busy schedule, you can surely find some time for yourself. Here are a few tips to help you get more free time for yourself.

Kid Friendly Shopping

If you are a parent and a shopping fiend, you will appreciate stores that are child friendly. Its a good idea to seek out child friendly stores in your local area to help you secure a bit of ‘me time’ when you go shopping. One of our favorite child friendly shops is IKEA. Even if you are not looking for new kitchen furniture or bits and bobs for the house, it can still be fun to go there and just chill out. They have a supervised play centre where children can stay for up to 30 minutes. During this time you know your children are safe and you can tick a few things off your never ending to do list.

Team Babysitting

One great idea to get time for you is to team up with another mum and take turns babysitting. Maybe schedule to take turns twice a month each. Use this time to do something that you really want to do rather than doing more chores. Maybe, you want to go for a run, play some music, go out for lunch, the choice is yours!

Don’t Forget to Date

When a couple has children, sure they spend plenty of time together but it can be difficult to get time for just the two of you together. It’s essential that you manage to create time for each other. We suggest you allocate one evening during the week that you dedicate for a date night. Have it early enough that you can put the kids to bed, restaurants are not as busy during the week and even better it will be easier to get a babysitter.

Run Errand With Your Friends

Running day-to-day essential errands can be time consuming and robotic. If you and your friend or neighbour do it together, you can change it into something fun. Boring chores can have a whole new life when you do them with a friend.

Childcare

Do not forget that there are also other ways to get more free time, while leaving your kids in reliable hands such as in a babysitting or childcare facilities. They provide all the love and care that children need and what is great about them is that most of the time, the actual care providers are mothers themselves. So they will know exactly what your kid needs while providing them with care and love.

These are just a few simple suggestions to help you to get more free time for yourself. You work hard and you deserve it. If you have any more suggestions, please let us know!

There is nothing more rewarding than being a parent and you need to be ready for the huge responsibility that comes along with it. Thinking how you can mold and prepare your children to face this world on their own can be scary, so you will need all the resources you can lay your hands on to help you ensure their safety and security. Fortunately, you have technology to help you out.

Mobile handsets and specially designed mobile apps can be used to help keep kids safe, communicate with them and more. Chances are that your children own mobile phones or similar devices, so aside from being a cool parent, you can also keep tabs on them for their own protection.

The MamaBear App

It is important to continue keeping tabs on your kids as they start to participate in more activities and meet new people. The MamaBear app allows you to keep an eye on your children without having to call or text. All kids have to do is check in a location and communicate with a press of a button, while you keep tabs on their activity.

The Family GPS Tracker App

Your children might already be riding their bikes to and from school or commute by bus. Sadly, this can make it easy for them to wander into unfamiliar places and get lost. However, the Family GPS Tracker can help parents set boundaries and receive notifications whenever kids wander too far. The app also features communication tools so you can help your kids find their way should they get lost.

The FBI Child ID App

No parent will want to think about the possibility of their child going missing, but considering how dangerous our world can be at times, it is best to be prepared. The FBI Child ID app allows you to store photos and crucial information about your children along with tips on how to keep them safe. Resources are also made available to you via this app.

The Sex Offenders Search App

Whether you like or not, there are dangerous people in the world, such as sex offenders. This app can help ensure that your children are protected from any potential predators. A map of the surroundings can be checked using the Sex Offenders Search app for any registered sex offenders and you can warn your children to never stray around such places to prevent them from having to interact with such people. Learn more on what you can do if a predator contacts any of your children.

The Life360 App

If you spend long hours at the office each day, you will want to be able to locate your children to put your mind at peace. The Life360 app allows you to communicate with one another, sharing locations and sending notifications to one another. This app is useful among parents of a group of friends.

The MobileKids App

Children are now able to have access to mobile phones due to convenience for parents and children. Sadly, this accessibility also opens up a lot of possibilities wherein some can harm them. The MobileKids app protects children by allowing parents to block certain apps and contacts, while tracking mobile usage and setting hours for usage.
