Do you enjoy playing golf? It is becoming more and more popular with every day. Boasting some of the world`s most prestigious and challenging Links golf courses, the south west of Ireland is a must for any golfing enthusiasts. Irish golf holidays are growing in popularity due to the fact that visitors are spoiled for choice when it comes to picking courses to play during their stay.
There are a number of championship courses along the south west coast whom have played host to The Irish Open, The Palmer Cup and various Pro-am’s throughout the years. Some of the biggest names in the sport frequently visit these shores to play on courses such as Ballybunion, Old head, Lahinch and many more.
Lahinch Golf Club:
Founded in 1892, the old course at Lahinch is an extremely enjoyable course to play no matter what time of year. Just like any Links course, the elements come into play on every hole so the style of game changes constantly.
Two of the holes on this course (4th & 5th) remain virtually untouched or altered since their creation 121 years ago.
If you plan on checking out the cliffs of Moher while in Ireland, Lahinch is the perfect place to stay, as they are only a 15-minute drive away.
Ballybunion Golf Club:
Further down the coast in Co.Kerry is the home to what is probably the most famous golf club in the southwest, Ballybunion golf club. With two excellent courses to choose from, it is highly recommended that visitors try their hand on the old course.
Some of the biggest names in the game have played here over the years with the inclusion of Bill Clinton back in 98’. During high season visitors should be sure to book in advance as tee times are limited and cost approx €180 for a round on the old course and €65 for the Cashen course. There are special offers for visitors who wish to play both courses, which no doubt you will once you set eyes on the breathtaking Ballybunion coastline.
Old Head Golf Club:
These picturesque 18 holes of golf have been described as “the most spectacular course on earth”. With the Ocean claiming as many strokes as the challenging greens, the views on this course are breathtaking. Cliffs come into play more than some might prefer but try to enjoy the views of the fierce ocean crashing against the weathered coastline when taking a drop. Founded in 1997, this is a more modern course than the two mentioned above, but where it lacks in age, it prospers in beauty.
If parkland golf is more what you imagined, then you can find that as well. The midlands in Ireland play host to a number of Manor estates and castle grounds, which over the last 20 years have expanded to brilliant golfing locations.
To mention a few of the more prestigious parkland courses available, no list can exclude Adare Manor. Located in Co.Limerick, this picture perfect estate was the location for the 2010 JP McManus pro-am, which included participants such as Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk.
Either way, if you visit Ireland looking for a golf vacations or just to get some experience, you will get just that. Choose wisely on the time of year to visit though as winters can be extreme, especially on the Atlantic coast. Best times to visit would be between April – September. Enjoy and happy golfing!
